6. Pregnancy:
For something that is as natural as having a child, pregnancy can really have some profound health effects on your body.
Academy of General Dentistry spokesperson Gigi Meinecke DDS states “Changes in hormone levels during pregnancy, particularly surges in estrogen and progesterone, can cause inflammation of the gums, which can lead to gingivitis (red, swollen, tender gums that are more likely to bleed) and put you at risk for infection.”
Also there is a link between untreated gum disease and pre-term and low-birth-weight babies. Because of this and the tendency for women to get gum disease during pregnancy, more and more dentists are recommending cleanings every 3 months during pregnancy.
If you experience morning sickness, you should rinse your mouth out with water at a minimum or brush as soon as possible to neutralize the acidity caused by vomiting. This acid can lead to tooth erosion as well as decay.
7. Diet Pills:
Quick fixes usually have consequences and diet pills are no exception to this rule.
Halpern states "Like many over-the-counter and prescription medications, diet pills decrease salivary flow, which causes dry mouth and puts you at risk for gum disease, tooth decay and discomfort."
Saliva is nature's cleaning fluid and its reduction has serious repercussions.
So even though they might seem like a fast way to reduce your waistline, they can be a fast way to decay and gum disease.
The tried and true approach of diet and exercise is still the best approach for both your waist and your mouth.
